Quartz Countertops Toronto

Quartz is one of the hardest minerals on Earth. This is perhaps the most durable material possible for a countertop, and yet its appearance is strikingly perfect. Quartz can be readily supplied in a variety of eye catching colours making this a good choice for island cabinets, or areas the homeowner wants to show off space and style. This is an engineered stone, but the look is completely natural and remarkable.

Colours and Styles of Quartz

The counter top can become the jewel of the kitchen with quartz. The colours of this stone are amazing with, deep greens, various shades of red, as well as more muted colours such as brown, beige, sand and gold. Quartz, sometimes has a veined appearance, allowing for two tones of various colours such as light blue with deeper blue running through it. Since this is a manufactured stone it can also be found with sparkly metallic, or gold notes running through the stone. At one time it was only possible to find quartz in a glossy finish, but now it can be found with a honed or sandblasted look giving it the appearance of other natural stones such as granite or marble. From glossy to a softer, more leather look this stone can be fitted into almost any kitchen style from sleek to rustic. While this is a traditional look in the kitchen, in some colours such as a glossy black, deep red or gold it can also work among eclectic elements.

How is Quartz Used in the Manufacturing of Countertops?

Quartz goes into the making of many different things, including jewelry and furnishings. To create a countertop this natural mineral’s crystals are mined, and then ground into a dust. The dust is fused with resin binders through the use of intense heat and pressure and formed into a compact, solid slab. Pigments are added at points during this process to give colour to the finished product. This material is heavy, and can actually last for generations if well maintained. While it’s usually sealed after processing it doesn’t need to be sealed thereafter, and can be cleaned with a gentle cleanser and hot water.

Antimicrobial Resin Binders

Because during the manufacturer process resin binders are added to the crystal compounds the quartz slab is non-porous. Unlike some types of natural stone with porous attributes this manufactured stone is resistant to stain and odour causing bacteria. Mold and mildew can’t penetrate the concentrated surface of this material.

Up Keep for Quartz

The maintenance for quartz is easy except for one element common in the kitchen. Extreme heat can be a problem. These counters are heat and scorch resistant up to 400 degrees F, but sudden changes in temperature or something left sitting on the counter for more than a few seconds can cause cracking. For this reason when removing a pan from the stove or oven, it’s best to use a hot pad when placing it on the countertop.

Quartz Counter-Tops

Quartz counter-tops are a durable and beautiful choice for any Toronto kitchen. The color variations that homeowners can get from this material are seemingly endless. Quartz is also extremely durable and easy to clean, so it’s perfect for busy households with bustling kitchens.

How are quartz counter-tops made?

Unlike granite or marble counter-tops which are mined from the earth in a single slab, quartz counter tops are actually a combination of crushed quartz and resin. This is ideal for those who are looking for a natural stone counter-top that is uniform in colour, although this type of counter-top can also be made to have colour variations as well.

  • Reasons for choosing quartz countertops

Toronto residents choose quartz counter-tops for their kitchens for a variety of reasons. As mentioned before, quartz does not have the veining that granite or marble has but a smoother and more uniform appearance. Some people prefer this look while others consider it a drawback.

Quartz counter-tops are extremely easy to clean and maintain. Because the material is non-porous, it does not need to be sealed. There is no need to worry that a spilled cup of coffee or glass of red wine is going to cause staining. A quick wipe with a dishcloth or paper towel is all that is needed to take care of a mess.

Another advantage of quartz, is that seems are often less visible than they are with other types of stone.

  • Reasons why you might not choose quartz

The only real drawback to using quartz is that it does have some sensitivity to UV light. If your kitchen as some areas that get a lot of sunlight coming in and other areas that get very little sunlight, you may notice some discoloration over time.

If however, you kitchen has a pretty even distribution of sunlight throughout, then you likely will not notice any changes even though very subtle ones may be occurring.

  • Installing your quartz countertop

Installing any kind of countertop is a big job since it typically involves removing the sink and plumbing as well as any backsplashes.

Also, quartz is extremely heavy. Many people are surprised to learn that it is even heavier than granite. During installation, it is important that everything fits perfectly.

For these reasons, you should only have well-qualified and experienced tradespeople installing your quartz countertop for you.
