Selecting a Material For Kitchen Countertops

One type of material that creates a great impression in the kitchen, and that’s known to keep a fantastic appearance for years is natural stone. The most common selections in natural stone for countertops are slate and granite. Soapstone, through not as familiar to most homeowners is also a good choice. Granite is possibly the best option for its attractiveness. As it’s found in several different colours, it’s easy to find one that matches a kitchen’s colour tones. This type of stone is often obtainable in large slabs so seams are not a problem. Granite is usually the highest priced natural stone. Soapstone and slate come in fewer colours than granite, and aren’t quite as strong, but both are dense enough to be resistant to normal wear. Slate in particular has a nonporous quality that makes it naturally almost maintenance free.

Solid surfaces such as Avonite and Gibraitar made from acrylics and poly fills are another choice. The higher the quality the more resistant, these will be to stains and scratches. The biggest benefit to manufactured surfaces for countertops are these can be matched exactly by colour and style with other elements of the kitchen.

Those who want a traditional or rustic look often select either ceramic tile or wood. The tile must be chosen carefully however, since many types will not be up to the daily tasks common in kitchens. Ceramic is a good choice for secondary work surfaces, but these should always be checked for rating. Those tiles are not rated for either floors or countertops. Wood is not as popular as it once was as this is a porous material and will show wear and tear eventually. Wood counters that are made of very hard wood such as rock maple however, can sustain their appearance for years.

Stainless steel is a material that’s become increasing popular in Toronto due to its durability, and style. This material can often blend in with other decorating choices easily. Clean up is simple, and many scratch resistant surfaces such as this can be utilized without concern for diminishing its appearance. As the surface is reflective it can be used in an environment with almost any other colour or style.

Types Of Kitchen Countertops

In searching for the right décor, many shoppers are surprised by the choices of countertops. From too drab to overly ornate a countertop that doesn’t fit the home’s interior style detracts from the kitchen’s overall appearance. Selecting the right materials, style and colour are important to the home’s overall value. At the same time countertops should also be functional, well designed, and resistance to damage from normal use.

Granite

Granite is a beautiful countertop material that is durable and scratch resistant. You can be assured that your kitchen surfaces will be resistive to damage caused by sharp objects or general wear and tear if they are made of granite. However, be prepared to seal it time and again especially if you want to avoid staining. Also, granite is a heavy material, so your kitchen cabinets need to be strong enough to handle the weight. This material is very common because of its longevity and sturdiness.

Quartz

Quartz is one of those countertop materials that’s often chosen because of its versatility in terms of style. There are so many style possibilities when it comes to quartz. You can have countertops designed in any colour you envision if you choose quartz. It’s also cheaper than granite and marble which makes it common in modern kitchens.

Porcelain

Fabricators love porcelain as a countertop material because it’s not only lightweight but also easy to cut and install. Porcelain is often used in kitchens because it offers durability, versatility, and ease of maintenance. It comes in many unique colours so it’s easy to find a countertop that complements the rest of your kitchen design. Porcelain can be produced to mimic the look of natural stone or wood which makes it a popular choice for homeowners who want to save costs and enjoy a timeless looking countertop.

Marble

If you’re in search of elegance and sophistication in your kitchen space, choose a marble countertop. This countertop material comes in a unique texture and can last for many years even when exposed to heavy usage. Marble is a very durable countertop material that is commonly found in high-end homes.

Soapstone

Though not very commonly used in kitchen countertops, soapstone is a stunning material that is heat resistant and comes in beautiful finishes. Soapstone countertops are easy to maintain. In fact, small scratches can be quickly repaired by sanding the surface gently and then coating it with some mineral oil. The only drawback is that soapstone, unlike materials like marble, will nick, cut and scratch easily.

Dekton

Dekton is an engineered stone that is highly scratch resistant which means it’s an excellent choice for kitchens where the surface is exposed to sharp objects. Stains can also be easily removed from the surface by wiping them down. With a Dekton kitchen countertop, you can place hot pots and pans on the surface and never worry of damage since the material is fire and heat resistant. Dekton also offers a better colour consistency and is non-porous so it will not require sealing every other time.
